Not Presumptuous

I’m sure most of you have seen this at Digby’s or FDL, or Olliver’s.

I’m beginning to think that people who aren’t going online and getting their news and spin thereof, think this is the weirdest campaign they’ve ever seen. It’s not this ad, which follows the Rovian tactic of accusing your opponent of doing precisely what you are doing, because I think most people that just watch TV also know that this is what the McCain camp is doing here. (Of course I’m assuming that you do both, and on occasion actually pick up some graphite technology and read that too.) But if you only read the net, or only watch TV, half of what is being said makes absolutely no sense.

Can Anything Good Ever Come Out Of Congress?

HmmmSome links for those who want more wonkishness related to the 6/27 column.

Less! Wonk!

The gasoline contango(*) shows you a clear case of the futures market providing an incentive to hoard fuel, on a seasonal basis: huge positive contango in the winter, because prices rise during the summer driving season, and strong backwardation as summer draws to a close.

WTF -this ain’t no North Carolina license plate,

* Contango Vs. Normal Backwardation

The shape of the futures curve is important to commodity hedgers and speculators. Both care about whether commodity futures markets are contango markets or normal backwardation markets. This isn’t semantic: in 1993 the German company Metallgesellschaft (f)amously lost more than $1 billion dollars – mostly because management deployed a hedging system that profited from normal backwardation markets but did not anticipate a shift to contango markets. In this article, we’ll lay out the difference between contango and backwardation and show you how to avoid serious losses.

Interestingly enough speculators and speculation is used by the bean counters but since the market is itself speculative in its’ very nature the term should not be used except by the priesthood. Or something like that. Captive investors are encouraged to speculate on, *WTF is going here!

I put the asterix, or star, where it belonged.

Internet overhaul wins approval

A complete overhaul of the way in which people navigate the internet has been given the go-ahead in Paris.

The net’s regulator, Icann, voted unanimously to relax the strict rules on so-called “top-level” domain names, such as .com or .uk.

The decision means that companies could turn brands into web addresses, while individuals could use their names.

Think of all the link rot.

There Isn’t Any Energy Crisis

There is a price of energy crisis.

In the spring of 2002, under order from a federal judge, the U.S. Department of Energy released to NRDC roughly 13,500 pages relating to previously secret proceedings of the Bush administration’s energy task force. (President Bush formed the task force in early 2001 to develop a national energy policy, with Vice President Cheney at the helm.) Even though the government heavily censored the documents before supplying them to NRDC, they reveal that Bush administration officials sought extensive advice from utility companies and the oil, gas, coal and nuclear energy industries, and incorporated their recommendations, often word for word, into the energy plan.

There is a lot of background to this current story that is just not being brought into focus for the public.

If the media would get out of the tank on this,(Results 1 – 10 of about 2,060,000 for Energy Task Force. (0.08 seconds,) we could use the space for energy.

That Ain’t Science

White Patches Found in Mars Trench Are Ice, Scientists Say Talk about religious fervor,

“It must be ice,” said Dr. Peter H. Smith of the University of Arizona, the mission’s principal investigator. “The whole science team thinks this. I think we feel this is definite proof that these are little chunks of icy material.”

Update:At −78.51° C or -109.3° F, carbon dioxide changes directly from a solid phase to a gaseous phase through sublimation, or from gaseous to solid through deposition.

The point being that observation is only a part of the art of science, experimentation also being a nice touch before asserting a thing.

Update: Teh Google.

Tug Boating John McCain?

Swift-Boating Here to Stay

They are and there isn’t. There’s a decent chance both of the campaigns will forswear the practice but zero chance that their surrogates won’t engage in whatever tactics they think give their team the best chance at winning.

Editors Note: I misread the last word excerpted, I thought it was whining, my bad.

Bamboozler Express

(That Ought To Work)

After they dropped ‘privatization’ they called it ‘private accounts’. And when ‘private accounts’ tanked too, they said that ‘private accounts’ wasn’t fair either. They were really ‘personal accounts.’ The whole thing just got silly and sad.

McCain Stuck In Spin Cycle

The most coherent goal the U.S. can hope for in Afghanistan, according to the ex-CIA official, is probably the avoidance of national humiliation. “I suppose that’s the best we can do with Bush’s wars,” the former official said.

You’ll have to thwart the google and read the article.
