Scientists reported Wednesday that they had taken a significant step toward altering the fundamental alphabet of life — creating an organism with an expanded artificial genetic code in its DNA.
This, along with cyber fusion techniques, while showing promise also has a creepy factor to overcome,
The work also gives some support to the concept that life can exist elsewhere in the universe using genetics different from those on Earth.
To be honest, while expecting to find life in the universe I’ve never thought that it would have to be the same genetics, much less be carbon based, and along the lines of Hawkings, would not be too surprised if it was hostile to life on Earth, like humans are. Earth will survive, mankind is problematic.
But the research, published online by the journal Nature, is bound to raise safety concerns and questions about whether humans are playing God.
If you want to go there Psalm 82:6 says we are gods, sons of the living God, so it is best to keep that in mind when discussing human behaviors on that level of abstraction, or moving between the levels of abstraction that this statement does.
My concern is mankind’s inability to actually control any complex system that they create, and life is as complex a system as any, so, ‘what could go wrong?,’ should not only be the first question asked by scientist, but the rest of us as well.
